Dong Wha itself found out its defects as a traditional company - not very flexible in change and a lack of enterprising spirit - and started to strengthen modern pharmaceutical technologies. In 1966, the head office and factory were newly established and equipped with modern production facilities and an automatic manufacturing process. After all, all trials after the liberation taught Dong Wha a great lesson that made Dong Wha progress on and on with a spirit of enterprise.
Dong Wha buckled to research and develop therapeutic products as a comprehensive pharmaceutical products manufacturer. Under the government's economic policy of saving foreign currency by localization of overseas imports and acquisition of foreign currency by export, Dong Wha devoted attention to producing raw materials. As a result, in 1972, Dong Wha succeeded in producing Metoclopramide, a digestive function modifier and Trimethoprim, an antimicrobials with its own technology, and as Anyang factory equipped with modernized production facilities and manufacturing process was built, Dong Wha prepared itself for development.
That same year, 1972, Dong Wha concluded a licensing agreement with Sandoz(Novartis), the Swiss therapeutic products manufacturer, in order to introduce new products and advanced pharmaceutical technology, followed by 17 world famous pharmaceutical companies including Marion of USA(Aventis), Leo of Denmark, Lacteol(Axcan) and Dexo of France, Sankyo of Japan. In the cooperation with these foreign alliances, Dong Wha built up the marketing strength and learned each company's own technology.
In the next year, 1973, the central research laboratories were set under direct control of the president and concentrated investment was made for the research. Also, Dong Wha concentrated on introduction of new technology and produced Hydergine, the first Korean neurodegenerative disease drug, in 1975, followed by Parlodel(prolactin inhibitor), Fucidin ointment(topical antibiotics), Selexid(antibiotics),
cefmetazone(antibiotics), and Loxonin(NSAIDS) which are remarkable
therapeutics.
During this fast growth, the company rendered social services, establishing "Orphan Drug Center", the only one in Korea, in 1973 and in result, Presidential medal(Bronze Tower / Dongtab), the order of Industrial Merit was awarded in 1974.
Dong Wha reorganized its management structure for renovation of its appearance as a comprehensive pharmaceutical products manufacturer and KIM, Hong-Kee, a nonowner manager, was assigned as the 8th president, introducing MBO(management by object) system. Soon after, Dong Wha offered shares for public subscription and turned into
a publicly held company in 1976. On a solid basis as the company of the people, Dong Wha have grown up as a modern pharmaceutical company both nominally and virtually. |
